“The Queen of the Rifle,” Phoebe Anne Oakley Moses was born in Darke County, Ohio on August 13, 1860. Her father died when she was five and her mother remarried. At age seven, Annie and her stepfather went to the fields to hunt for their Thanksgiving meal. Annie heard the “gobble” of a wild turkey and begged to shoot. Thinking she would be frightened by the blast and be content to shoot no more, her stepfather handed her his gun. “Bang!” A wild turkey lay at their feet. Thus began a life in which Annie, called “Little Sure Shot,” would shock and delight everyone around her with her sharpshooting prowess.
For years Annie Oakley was the star performer in the famous Buffalo Bill Wild West Show, which entertained audiences all over the United States and Europe. England’s Queen Victoria was delighted with her performance.
Annie was immortalized by the American musical comedy, Annie Get Your Gun.
